How’s your energy?
Not the most usual question I grant you
I will ask you again- How’s your energy?
Did you know that THIS IS THE KEY TO GREAT PRODUCTIVITY!
The big problem is YOU cannot magic up more time in your day
We only have 24 hours in every day.
This has been overlooked by time management gurus.
It’s not Time that’s Important its ENERGY!
Yes we have been taught that managing our TIME is the path to better productivity. Indeed I discuss this in my workshops and in my coaching.
However, I came across a theory that really pushes this forward and is the real secret behind productivity.
Its all about Energy.
We know that we have more/less energy at different times of the day. But had you realised that some tasks are more draining/energising than others? This is very important to be aware of to become more productive.
How do you know your energy status at any time of the day?
Do an Energy Audit
I would suggest that for a couple of days (a couple of weeks would be optimal to include work days and non work days) that you make a note of tasks that drain you and those that energise you and give them a number from -2 to +2.
-2 is very draining tasks, you would rather not do that again, -1 draining but tolerable, +1 is something that you enjoy and gives you a boost and +2 tasks is a task you live for, you love it and it makes you buzz with excitement.
Once you have scored your tasks then you can give yourself an overall score for that day or week.
You can then easily see which activities are draining and those which are not.
This audit will also allow you to see which morning/afternoons/days are more draining. This information will be vital to help you decide where to focus on.
What’s the next step?
Once you know what types of activities are draining as well as what times of the days you have energy dips you can then start to look at how you can tweak with your weekly diary, your daily diary and your to-do list to make the most of the energy you have.
You are then creating an optimal environment and working with your own body rhythms for maximal production.
It may even IMPROVE your work day 🙂
