Watch out for your future -resistance is futile!

So we are led to believe

Are you worried that you are going to be assimilated?

Or do you realise that you have already been assimilated?

Apologies to the non-Trekkies amongst you wondering what I am talking about

The Borg are a species that assimilate (incorporate) other species (who all look rather human like!) into their cube or hive by taking them over. They inform these species on first contact “Resistance is futile”. Usually it is!

Medicine and the NHS can be a bit like living in a Borg Cube – go with me on this…..

It needs a lot of people to get the cube to charge through space, find another species, conquer them and then assimilate them.

Not quite the same as helping patients exactly but they have a clear goal in mind and there are a lot of people moving in one direction together. They know what they have to do, and are clear on their purpose.

Obviously, when the Borg meet a new species they need a slightly different way of being conquered. The Borg adapt to this. Each species is then assimilated.

On the positive, they all work for the same goal, the cube provides everything for them and they are never alone. In many ways not dissimilar to the NHS (perhaps at times with the exception of having everything provided).

On the negative side, the good of the Borg cube overrides the needs of the individual drones. The drones frequently need to change what they are doing at a moments notice (like when guidance changes in the NHS). Finally they are expendable if necessary.

I wonder how many of us feel expendable at times?
