What to do when people scorn your goals!

My husband is one of “those” guys.

You know, the ones that can do ANYTHING.

As handy with a wrench as with frying pan and latterly with seeds and compost.

He took it upon himself 2 years ago to sow a few (50) foxglove seeds. Foxgloves have a special significance in our household as my daughter was born in early June. The year she was born, we managed to get out into the sunshine, with our newborn and all we could see were lots of foxgloves. Since then we have always said they were our daughter’s flowers.

Two years ago, we decided to let our tiny patch of grass, euphemistically called our front garden, grow wild to attract wildlife.

It also meant it was not mowed and that suited my husband just fine!

Since then we have heard tutting from the neighbours but we are oblivious.

At some point, my husband decided he would like to grow some foxgloves for our daughter. He looked up how to do it at How to Grow Foxgloves – BBC Gardeners World Magazine. I thought it was a mad idea, especially after I heard they are bi-annual plants. Two years from seed to flower- no way were we going to have any flowers. Also foxgloves look great in the wild, in the hedgerows. But on an estate, in a confined piece of ground- nope it just was not worth the effort.

I scorned his goals

Despite my reservations, he quietly got on with sowing the seeds, pricking them out, and finally planting out the young plants last year.

Well the picture says it all. We have a garden full of foxgloves in time for my daughters birthday!

If my husband did not have that goal of foxgloves in the front garden for my daughter it would not have happened.

That goal meant a lot to him.

He was invested in it.

This investment took him though the disappointment of not all seeds germinating, losing a few plants to wildlife (and the window cleaner’s big feet) and the tutting of the neighbours.

So for all of us I think its a lesson in what happens if you do not have goals?

With no goals you will remain stuck and missing out on many of the opportunities that life can bring you.

What have you decided to do that others told you was a waste of time?

Or do you feel clueless when it comes to goals.
